During October we have been celebrating reaching our 10th anniversary since opening. In 2008 the centre became the 4th Gamma Knife centre in the UK and began a long standing partnership with the National Centre for Steterotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STHT).In the interim over 2000 patient have received Gamma Knife treatment at the centre

During the 10 years Gamma Knife technology has continued to be recognised as the Gold Standard with clinical acceptance of the advantages its offers to patient ever increasing together with a vast body of literature demonstrating its proven clinical outcomes. SRS hasnow been commissioned nationally BY NHSE as a vital part of the Cancer strategy with STHT awarded a 7 year contract in 2016 from NHSE as the SRS SupraCentre for  the North of England with the Thornbury Gamma Knife Centre as sub-contractor.

Since the award of the contract there has been a significant increase in patient volumes to the centre particularly for patients suffering with brain metastases. This reflects greater awareness of the clinical advantages of Gamma Knife raidosurgery as compared to whole brain radiotherapy, offering an alternative which spares healthy tissue leading to advantages such as better retention of cognitive function which is so important to quality of life as patients liver longer as their primary disease continues to be better controlled.

Lynne Brooks, CEO commented “We are immensely proud of our achievements over the last 10 years delivering a service which has so many benefits for patients. Behind every case is a story and seeing the difference Gamma Knife can make keeps us motivated to continue to raise awareness and access to this remarkable technology. I would like to thank the whole team for their continued efforts.  With many with us from the very start also recognise their contribution which often goes that extra mile to ensure patients experience the best possible service”.
